Section 508 Compliance Information

What is Section 508?

Section 508 is an amendment to The Rehabilitation Act of 1973 that requires Federal agencies to make their electronic and information technology (EIT) accessible to people with disabilities. Passed by Congress in 1998, the purpose of Section 508 is to eliminate the obstacles that information technology may present to accessing information, present people with disabilities with new opportunities, provide people with disabilities access to information that is comparable to the access available to others, and encourage the development of technologies that facilitate achieving these goals.

Specifically, Section 508 of that act requires that when Federal agencies develop, procure, maintain, or use EIT, Federal employees with disabilities have access to and use of information and data that is comparable to the access and use by Federal employees who are not individuals with disabilities, unless an undue burden would be imposed on the agency.
